ByteTree Venture: Our Value and Momentum Strategy Explained

On Thursday, we ran our first-ever webinar dedicated to Venture, our model portfolio service focused on value and momentum. Our founder and CIO, Charlie Morris, was joined by senior analyst Kit Winder to discuss their stock-selection approach, the current portfolio themes, and highlight some of the stock picks behind this year’s performance.

Venture focuses on global opportunities with deep value and momentum, mostly in equities, but also in commodities, which can benefit from powerful moves. The portfolio has a higher risk tolerance than our other services, such as The Multi-Asset Investor, in search of higher returns. Consequently, turnover is also high, as we swap the positions that are no longer working for new opportunities. This approach has worked well so far, with the portfolio up over 20% YTD.

It has been a significant year for Venture, as we shifted from a tip-sheet approach to a model portfolio. Since May 2026, we have tracked live performance monthly and have also backdated performance to the tip sheet years. As shown below, Venture has strongly outperformed its benchmark, the World Index, since it became fully invested at the end of 2024.

Venture Backdated Performance

Venture is driven by two factors above all: value and momentum. Using ByteTrend, our proprietary momentum dataset, we can screen thousands of global stocks to identify the themes and sectors with the strongest current trends. We then apply our deep fundamental analysis to identify value within that group.

The key themes it is currently exposed to are:

  • Fintech
  • Biotech
  • Commodities
  • Chemicals
  • Precious metals
  • Energy
  • UK Deep Value
  • Software

In this webinar, Charlie and Kit unpacked how Venture’s value-and-momentum process works in practice — walking through real trades in the portfolio, from Brazilian energy distributor Ultrapar (now Venture’s third-largest holding) to genomics business Illumina and Italian steelmaker Danielli. They also discussed how the portfolio manages risk when markets turn and answered client queries.

Many thanks,

Charlie Morris

General - Your capital is at risk when you invest, never risk more than you can afford to lose. Past performance and forecasts are not reliable indicators of future results. Bid/offer spreads, commissions, fees and other charges can reduce returns from investments. There is no guarantee dividends will be paid. Overseas shares - Some recommendations may be denominated in a currency other than sterling. The return from these may increase or decrease as a result of currency fluctuations. Any dividends will be taxed at source in the country of issue.

Funds - Fund performance relies on the performance of the underlying investments, and there is counterparty default risk which could result in a loss not represented by the underlying investment. Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) with derivative exposure (leveraged or inverted ETFs) are highly speculative and are not suitable for risk-averse investors.

Bonds - Investing in bonds carries interest rate risk. A bondholder has committed to receiving a fixed rate of return for a fixed period. If the market interest rate rises from the date of the bond's purchase, the bond's price will fall. There is also the risk that the bond issuer could default on their obligations to pay interest as scheduled, or to repay capital at the maturity of the bond.

Taxation - Profits from investments, and any profits from converting cryptocurrency back into fiat currency is subject to capital gains tax. Tax treatment depends on individual circumstances and may be subject to change.
